Spring Commissioning: Get Your Boat Engine Ready for the Season

After months of winter storage, your boat engine needs attention before hitting the water. Proper spring commissioning prevents breakdowns and ensures safe, reliable performance all season.

Pre-Launch Engine Inspection

Visual Inspection

  • Check for any animal nests or debris in cowling
  • Inspect all hoses for cracks, swelling, or deterioration
  • Look for corrosion on electrical connections
  • Check belts for wear and proper tension
  • Inspect fuel lines for cracks or leaks

Fluid Checks

  • Engine oil: Check level and condition (change if not done during winterization)
  • Gear oil: Check level through inspection port
  • Power steering fluid: If equipped, verify proper level
  • Coolant: For closed-cooling systems, check level and condition

Fuel System

  1. Inspect fuel tank for water (use water-finding paste)
  2. Replace fuel filter (especially important after winter)
  3. Check primer bulb firmness and operation
  4. Inspect fuel lines for cracks or soft spots
  5. If fuel is old or unstabilized, consider draining and replacing

Battery and Electrical

  • Clean battery terminals thoroughly
  • Load test battery (should hold 12.6V+)
  • Check all electrical connections for corrosion
  • Test navigation lights, horn, and electronics
  • Verify kill switch and lanyard function

Water Pump and Cooling

  • Inspect water pump impeller (replace if over 2 years old)
  • Check thermostat operation
  • Inspect water intake for blockages
  • Look for any cooling system leaks

Lower Unit Inspection

  • Check propeller for damage (dings, bent blades)
  • Inspect prop shaft seal for leaks
  • Verify skeg condition
  • Check anodes and replace if more than 50% depleted

Test Run on Muffs

  1. Connect flush muffs and water supply
  2. Start engine and verify water pump operation (check tell-tale)
  3. Let engine warm to operating temperature
  4. Check for any unusual noises or vibrations
  5. Verify shifting into forward and reverse
  6. Check for any leaks while running

First On-Water Run

  • Start slow and check gauges frequently
  • Verify all temperatures stay normal
  • Test performance at various speeds
  • Listen for any unusual sounds
