Understanding Boat Engine Hours: What's Good, What's Too Much

Engine hours are the marine equivalent of car mileage, but they tell a more complex story. Understanding hours helps you evaluate used boats and engines accurately.

What Are Engine Hours?

Engine hours measure actual running time, recorded by an hour meter. Unlike car miles, hours don't account for speed or load—an hour of trolling counts the same as an hour at full throttle.

How Hours Compare to Miles

A rough conversion:

  • 1 engine hour ≈ 30-50 miles of driving
  • 1,000 hours ≈ 30,000-50,000 car miles
  • Varies significantly based on use patterns

What's Considered Low/High Hours?

Outboard Engines

HoursAssessment
0-200Like new
200-500Low hours, excellent
500-1,000Moderate, good value
1,000-1,500Higher, needs inspection
1,500+High, careful evaluation needed

Gas Inboard Engines

Similar to outboards. Expected lifespan: 1,500-2,500 hours.

Diesel Inboard Engines

HoursAssessment
0-1,000Low hours
1,000-3,000Moderate
3,000-5,000Getting up there
5,000+High but diesels can go much further

Hours vs. Maintenance

Important: Hours alone don't tell the whole story. A well-maintained 1,000-hour engine can be better than a neglected 300-hour engine.

What matters more:

  • Regular oil changes and service records
  • How the engine was used (trolling vs. running hard)
  • Freshwater vs. saltwater operation
  • Proper winterization and storage

Red Flags Regardless of Hours

  • No maintenance records
  • Compression variation between cylinders
  • Milky oil (water intrusion)
  • Metal particles in gear oil
  • Visible corrosion or neglect
  • Hour meter that's been replaced or reset

The Hour Meter Question

Be cautious of:

  • Disconnected or non-functional hour meters
  • Recently replaced meters with low hours
  • Hours that don't match apparent wear

What to Pay Based on Hours

General used engine value guidelines:

  • Under 200 hours: 70-80% of new price
  • 200-500 hours: 55-70% of new price
  • 500-1,000 hours: 40-55% of new price
  • Over 1,000 hours: 25-40% of new price
